  • Chaos gearing up for their second

Aug 6 • All Updates, Indian News, News • 4126 Views

Amidst the scenic mountains and winding rivers, Kerala isn’t a place where you would usually expect a mosh-pit and a thrash metal band delivering their wicked sermon. This cliché-ridden world with its usual dose of banality does not let you think otherwise. But ripping apart conventions and decimating the odds, is veteran thrash metal band, Chaos. With Trivandrum as their epicenter, they have been violently conquering gigs and their tremors can be felt all around, toppling things over and cracking walls with their power-packed songs.

Their focus right now is on their next album which will be released later this year in September. The band has cleared their gig calendar so that they can devote themselves to creating a poisonous brew to slaughter its fans with face-melting thrash.

The entire metal community erupted with the missile that came in the form of Violent Redemption. Rave reviews and electrifying gigs followed. The overwhelming positive response has guided them to newer ideas and they promise to deliver more in their next album.

“…It does put a little pressure on us to come out with something better than that, without disappointing the fans that Violent Redemption has given us. At the same time, it gave us the confidence to move forward and do what we had to do with more intensity than ever before. We were really anxious about what the world would think of our music while we were releasing Violent Redemption,” says the band.

It isn’t new that thrash metal deals with the issues that have plagued society since time immemorial. Chaos is no different; but the religious and political setting of a nation does give the nature of lyrical content a bona fide feel and people can relate to it more. Issues that create segregations especially religion and racism are what reverberates through the lyrics of the new songs that they are currently working on. Fans should expect a song solely based on the current nature of the media that has a bizarre habit of celebrating tragedies whether it is a rape or a murder or even a natural calamity.

On being asked to shed more light on the nature of content in the new album Chaos says, “Things that make people act like assholes without even them realizing that they’re doing so. We’ve tried to stay away from political themes on this one as much as possible, but it creeps in involuntarily once in a while. There are instances where even we’re unknowingly prejudiced towards people without really wanting to be so…”

They firmly believe that people who loved Violent Redemption will have no complaints about this one either. However they have issued a warning of sorts that this is going to be faster, heavier and meaner than ever!

The band has a rather spontaneous process which loosely involves random conversations or events being penned down which is later accompanied by suitable riffs. But the entire fun in recording lies in the fact that no one in the band knows how the final structure of a song will sound like. Apart from the usual toying with the structure of a particular song and modifying it until it sounds satisfactory during jamming sessions, sometimes the songs assume their final structure during the process of recording.

According to lead guitarist Nikhil, “Most of the time, while we’re in the process of composing, the things that we come up with, would sound good to our ears then and there. We’ll try out different song structures and almost all of our songs are done in a single session. Then, we’ll let it sit for a few days and come back and listen to it. If we feel that changes are necessary, we’ll do so. This process continues multiple times until we’re all happy with the way it sounds. Once the song structures is fixed, l sit alone and come up with guitar solos and finalize that too. So, before we enter the studio for the actual recording, we’ll have the home recorded scratch version of the entire album …”

A little known fact is that Keshav Dhar, from the prog-rock band Skyharbor, is the producer of Chaos’ albums. His expertise and suggestions help shape their songs and that has been the case in their debut album as well. The band has no qualms in admitting the fact that Keshav is more like their fifth member who puts in an equal effort to come up with a great album just as the other members do.

  • Friday flashback: ‘Mark Tremonti – Cauterize’ Review

    Jul 31 • International News, Reviews • 7722 Views

Grammy award winner, alongside Creed and Alterbridge, Mark Tremonti in collaboration with Wolfgang Van Halen compose to cauterize our fret seeking needs. Incorporating rhythmic signatures mixed with heavy notes, embodied with melodious singing. Experience and composition are key factors which influence the music of the band/project; with Mark Tremonti (lead guitar and vocals), Wolfgang Van Halen (bass guitar), Garett Whitlock (drums) and Eric Friedman (backing vocals) acting as the heavy contributing quadrant, build a strong fan-following. Wolfgang is the new member replacement for Brian Marshall who provided the bass line for their first album “All I Was”.

Mark Tremonti’s exact words in a interview for the question regarding the inspirational artists, “The songs of 70’s Contemporary Rock played by my mom to the juvenile me sitting in the backseat of the car to speed metal ,thrash , slayer, black and so forth while growing up to the maturity.” Tremonti due to his heavy exposure with the expanse of music incorporates the heavy side of the metal with the 70’s soft rock melodies.

    Tremonti

    Cauterize

This album focused on pre production under Michael “Elvis” Baskette – The Producer who incorporated sound adopted by one of the five Sound-City-Board-like structures present in the world.

The song structures of Cauterize have basic ingredients such as groove, heavy, funk, metal, alternative with vocal line added by Mark Tremonti, backed by Eric Friedman. During the making, the band focused on tones by altering the default sound patched on each instrument. With their new singles Flying monkey and Another Heart, Cauterize started on stave instigated pigment rolling on the album reel.Cauterize with its shinning resonance among metal-heads for the diversity of genres will surely develop satisfaction among listeners and devotees. The focus on Metal tripping, concatenated with the feel, lead by soul tripping cauterizes each lick and riff played by Tremonti . The solo patch for Another Heart used with the Phrygian mode brings out the feel of the song thus displaying the abstract inception of emergence towards annihilation of the Heart that they speak of.

Song structures are very technically tabbed and provide for signatures defiantly fiddling with time. The riffs and the drums have been taken to optimistic guitar bridge notes, and off-hits on the snare yields patterns giving a broad abstract perspective to the void space in our lives called positivism.

The groove of the bassline and the off-beat drums together made the other new single Funky Monkey with a heavy intro dropping lower to D# on the sixth string. Energy quantized Quadrant project presents tremendous energy and power when live luring fans in the present crowd.Tremonti heading the band takes charge of the vocal line with perplexed riffs stressing on the high and lows for the syllables sang.Wolfgang with his Persona amidst the base ambience grooves with the slapping technique focused basically on the pulses found in the crevices of the self modulated base clef.

  • Exclusive Event Feature ‘ Strength Of Steel’

Jul 31 • Events, Indian News, News • 3106 Views

Kolkata Old School Metal Association have been organizing gigs for quite sometime, and with every gig their support and lineup continues to grow massive, They are working on their next venture ‘Strength of Steel’ to be held on August 22nd in Kolkata , We had a brief chat with the organizers about the show and what the fans should expect this time, And it’s pretty damn impressive. Read on.

How long has KOSMA been around and whose brainchild was it?

Well, KOSMA (Kolkata Old School Metal Association) is the brainchild of Samrat Daas (Mortar, Falcun). During 2011-12 the metal bands that existed in Kolkata predominantly played modern styles and genres of metal and there was almost no band that was interested in playing and exploring the older, more traditional sounds of heavy metal. It was only in the latter half of 2011 that two guys – Samrat & Indranil – both hugely passionate about heavy metal decided to form their own bands Mortar and Armament respectively. I’d say this was the pivotal point around which the seeds of KOSMA were sown with my longtime friend Somdatta and me getting more involved in the thick of things. The group was officially opened on Facebook on 9th April, 2012.

How many gigs have you guys at KOSMA organised since your inception and what were your line-ups?

Since our inception we have arranged five gigs with the latest one, Strength of Steel, due in August. The lineups for each gig are:

    1. a) Forged in Fire I – Steelbird, Mortuary, Apotheosis, Armament, Mortar, Dead Veneration
    2. b) Metal on Metal open air – Mortar, Armament, Dead Veneration, Gypsy
    3. c) Hard n’ Heavy open air – Mortar, Armament, Deadbolt, Blakhole, Gypsy, Steelbird
    4. d) Forged in Fire II – Mortar, Necrodeity, Deadbolt, Purgation, Das Hubris, Wicked Child
    5. e) Strength of Steel – Albatross, Primitiv, Hellwind, Blakhole, Falcun, Armament

All your gigs have been DIY except one, which we recall was crowd-funded. How was the support Strength Of Steel Ticketsthat you received for that particular gig?

Well, we were all very skeptical about the idea of doing a crowd funded gig but the support was in one word PHENOMENAL. Fans from all over India, even those who could not attend the show, chipped in contributions to raise funds and it just shows that KOSMA is not like any other XYZ group. Here most of the members know each other, have respect for each other and share the same passion and pride for old school hard rock and heavy metal music. It’s a place for celebrating the spirit of heavy metal.

Do you have any support/sponsors/partnerships for Strength of Steel?

We have Live: A Gig and Kolkata Metal Scene as our online promotional partners. Also, The Bunker Jam Studios is supporting this show. We also have a few friends all over India (they know who they are), who do their bit to provide the much needed support for a DIY gig like this and help us by contributing. We can’t thank each of you guys enough, because this means a lot to a small organization like us.

What made you decide on such a diverse lineup from punk rock band Blakhole to doom-death band Primitiv for your upcoming gig?

KOSMA always believes in “unity in diversity”, and that’s why we have genres all across the board in this edition. We have got three traditional heavy metal acts (Albatross, Hellwind, Falcun) which is a feat in itself, as most kids nowadays seem to have forgotten the roots of real heavy metal. Then, we have the ferocious punk attack of Blakhole, punk rock being another genre which is almost non-existent in Kolkata. (real punk rock I mean, not Green Day & Nirvana cover bands). There’s Armament, who are considered by many as the best thrash metal band in India right now. And of course, Primitv with their crushing death doom riffs adds yet another dimension to the lineup. So, there’s something for everyone.

What can the local metal-heads expect from the bands playing and from Strength of Steel?

Well, a heavy metal concert is much more than just coming to a show and watching bands. It’s also about meeting people who have similar thought patterns as you, because in normal everyday life, it’s hard to come across metal-heads. So, apart from watching spectacular and energetic stage performances by each band, you can come and feel yourself free among other fellow metal lovers without anyone to judge you or your actions and no taboos of any sort to tie you down. And we can all together bask in the glory of old school metal at Strength of Steel on Aug 22nd. And oh, each and every band will pay a tribute to the gods Black Sabbath; something that has never happened in the past in Calcutta.

Tickets: Passes will be distributed solely on 1st come 1st serve basis. Hurry up and get yours before they run out. Contact any of the below numbers for collecting your pass:- 9804431339, 8981010693, 8961185665, 9830717644, 9433136540.

    Album artwork - Egress Point

    Album artwork – Egress Point

What Escapes Me has released their artwork of their much anticipated debut album ‘Egress Point‘. The band is finishing up their album and the fans can expect the release in a couple of months. We spoke to the band regarding the concept of this beautiful artwork, “Its actually two parallel stories merging into one. In one of our songs titled ‘Flashback’, the story is about an athlete who after getting injured , gets introduced to the world prescribed drugs only to realize that these are slowly chaining him up mentally and physically until he resorts to Nature to help him overcome his problems. So Nature, in some ways provides him a portal/alternate dimension to heal himself. So nature is the athlete’s Egress Point

The other story is that we as a band use ‘What Escapes Me’ to escape our mundane life activities. ‘What Escapes Me’ is our Egress Point. So the athlete also in some ways depict us as a band who are using this portal to escape this world and into a better place hopefully. The parallel story line and their interconnection seemed like an interesting idea to come up with something visually and here we are.” the band said. The artwork has been designed by the band’s guitarist Arindam Sen.

Egress Point would feature 10 tracks by What Escapes Me . The tracklist was announced by the band earlier this year , for those who might have missed this we have it for you

    2. Pseudo Showcase
