Frontman Karan Kaul told us about the signing, “The deal was a freak accident. We released an EP ‘Tales from the Tide’ last year and as part of promotions for it, we were sending out copies everywhere. A copy somehow reached Universal.  They loved it! So they gave us a call. Next thing I know, we’d signed a contract with them.

Sridhar TVN, A&R of Universal Music (India) said, “Midhaven is a brilliant young metal band we are thrilled to represent; their music is a powerful combination of skilful musicianship, mystic & emotive lyrics and unbridled enthusiasm. Their album is an intense start for a band who are committed to produce & perform the best that you can hear in this genre.

The band quoted that,  “We’re honored that a major record label is appreciating the metal scene that has gradually grown over the years in our country. Signing with a label like Universal Music is an amazing feat for us, for a couple of years back, we were just a bunch of college kids with a dream.

The backing of a label makes a huge difference to any band. For Midhaven also it has had an effect. “It lends us a great amount of stability. They will be handling the distribution, promotion, marketing etc. of our album. We are thus getting a much wider release than we would have otherwise gotten. The album will go out worldwide. We are getting a lot more exposure. This has taken the pressure off us and enabled us to concentrate on the music. And the people at Universal have not interfered with our music at all. We’ve written the album on our own terms.

Comparing the album to their previous release, Karan tells us, “The new album will be a lot heavier than our previous EP. We felt that the songs on that release were quite light though they sounded good live. We have incorporated sludge metal on this album and it sounds heavy. The production also has been much more polished thanks to our producer, Jordan Veigas from Reverrse Polarity. We’ve put in a lot more effort this time around and it shows.”

‘Spellbound’ is a concept album with the plot influenced by Greek and Indian mythology and by popular games like the God of War series and Skyrim. The story follows a central character taking his revenge on the Gods. The cover shows us this character and it looks quite cool. The album releases on 24th March and is surely a release to look forward to by an extremely promising young band.

  • Review – ‘Mortar – Ground Zero EP’

    Mar 23 • Reviews • 2493 Views

Thrash is a style distinct from others due to its aggression, speed and accuracy. The very name Mortar is reminiscent of those 80′s thrash metal bands that took the scene by a storm. Hailing from Kolkata, Mortar is a new and much needed breed. The band was formed in late 2011 and after numerous line-up changes; they finally released their debut EP, “Ground Zero”. Currently Mortar has Nilabja on vocals, Samrat and Soham on guitars and Sayak on drums. While citing influences ranging from Exodus, Razor, Kreator, Sodom, and Overkill and not to mention Judas Priest and Iron maiden, the EP is a well-crafted homage to the legends.

    Track Listing:

    1. Napalm Messiah
    2. The Human Plague
    3. Ground Reality
    4. Hell Bent For Leather (Judas Priest Cover)

    Napalm Messiah
‘Napalm Messiah’, the first track, is typical old school thrash. And it’s nice to listen to some pure nerve wrecking thrash from an Indian band, ‘coz that rarely happens. The song oozes rawness that you would expect from any thrash metal song with solid riffs, sweet progressions, and not to mention the energy level. The solos and the vocals need some time to mature, but overall, it’s an impressive track.

    The Human Plague
‘The Human Plague’ is clearly distinct due to its unique riffs & progression. The track has two solos, perfectly timed and beautiful. At a personal level the song dragged me to the middle of a pit. Sayak is definitely the man, with some serious skills.

    Ground Reality
The third track, titled ‘Ground Reality’ is my favorite from the EP and will definitely go down into my playlist. Bang the head that will not bang! What a rush! The song is an achievement for Mortar, both lyrically and in the musical sense. The intensity of drumming, blastbeats, the tempo, the vocals, and not to forget the simplistic yet crazy-ass solo, sets this song apart.

    Hell Bent For Leather

“All await, engine’s ticking over. Hear the roar as they sense the fear.” Yes, you have got it right. Mortar’s EP ends with a cover of “Hell Bent for Leather” by Judas Priest. One can just imagine a motorcycle emerging from the midst. With fair vocals & decent tapping, the cover is slick and lively.
The album is immense and remarkable, though Mortar tries to stick to its raw-underground-thrash sound, in an overall manner, it will time and practice before they take the forefront of the thrash scene in India. The vocals, solos and the recording need a decent amount of work and maturity. And considering the fact that the band is new, there is not an iota of doubt that their future releases will be a mastery of their tradecraft. Even without a bassist, they managed a fucking sweet EP. So sky’s the limit for this blood thirsty horde. Do show your support by purchasing the EP and cherish the local scene that we have.

  • Halahkuh – Desecration Review

    Mar 23 • Reviews • 2426 Views

Halahkuh is a 4 piece Death/Thrash metal band from Pune. Current line-up consists of Vocals/ Bass by Prakhar Soni,Chinmay Bokil on leads, Rhythms by Subhrajyoti Sarkar and Arjun Menon on the Drums. Halahkuh is a phenomenally powerful entity, which is fully descration EP showcased in Desecration EP.

    Track listing:

    1. Ordeal (Intro)

    2. Sacrilege (featuring Shashank Bhatnagar)

    3. Possessed Strangulated and Enslaved

    4. In Extremis

The EP kicks off with Ordeal (Intro) which is a well-produced instrumental track creating the platform for the next biggie, Sacrilege, featuring the Goliath vocalist of Indian Metal scene, Shashank Bhatnagar (ex-Undying Inc.) The Riff feeds you with raw energy fully complementing the vocal power of Shashank and Prakhar. Quite heavy track and the message in the track is full of depth. It’s about how humankind has lost its meaning of being the most gifted species of all and now we are “condemned for the sin of sacrilege”.

Next up is Possessed, Strangulated and Enslaved. The track kicks in with pure energy and has shades of Big daddies of Thrash, Exodus. The best portion is the pre-chorus. The Thrashy interlude is very gripping and will give you shivers down your spine. There is a headbang mayhem on this one baby… Filled with pure energy and pure aggression, it’s a great Death/Thrash Classic which was able to “possess my psyche” after so long. \m/

The last track of the EP is In Extremis. It’s about fighting for the truth and for the better world. Lyrics are great and has a perfect expression of aggression embedded into it. The breakdown is awesome and the vocals shine in this one. Perfect execution!

With this small EP, the message is straight. Halahkuh is here for THRASHING and DESTROYING!!! \m/
