With the post-acquisition dust just about settling down, we at Metalspree have decided to take one last consummate step. Call it a change of name, a change of image or a subtle rebranding of sorts. A metamorphosis, well to a mild degree.

No surprises as to what our name is. It’s been out for quite some time now. And yet we’d like to take the personal pleasure of reiterating it.

From here forth we’d be known under the moniker

    THE SLUMBERING ENT

“These dreams of dread, I sprout,

All souls so weak, they rout.

These gnarled roots of mine, they bind,

All souls of so feeble, a mind.”

At least we’ve not succumbed to the disease disguised as norm of naming websites in the ‘metal + spin the word roulette’ fashion. Now as regards to our still rather silly new name one could say that our love for Tolkien lore came through. The Slumbering Ent is a reference to a character called ‘Old Man Willow’ that appears briefly on ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’. We guess our bloated yet phony attitudes make the title more befitting.

Lazy, grumpy and rather well accustomed to the light of pretension that is the so called ‘Metal Media’. Meh. The joke’s on us and so be it.

All said and done, we still have a new logo and a reworked cover art courtesy of Anoop Bhat. A man with a style all his own slowly becoming the go-to guy for artwork from the bizarre realm.

  • Evil Conscience to release debut EP ‘Death Is Only The Beginning’ in June

    May 3 • News • 3726 Views

Kolkata’s Evil Conscience, is synonymous with the cultural hubs on and off relationship with Heavy Metal frenzy. Instrumental in almost single-handedly organizing the revered “The Pit” initiative which brought the city’s helter skelter disorganized handful of Metal acts together under one roof. Unfortunately for the lads who took care of the city’s starvation for Heavy music, have always pulled the short end of the straw when it came to themselves. Plagued by lack of musician-friendly infrastructure, last minute line-up changes, the band never got the chance to put their debut out, till now. Changing their moniker from Death Is Only the Beginning to Evil Conscience a few years back, the 5-piece have been working their collective asses off promoting their brand of unrelenting Death Metal wherever they can.

    Evil Conscience

Currently putting finishing touches to their debut EP which releasing the coming month, the band is preparing for an intimate release show that will see them play the entire setlist live, comprising of tracks which they have never showcased before. The band gave us a little peek into what’s the concept behind their debut EP:

The conception behind the EP takes us all back to the time when we were young, innocent and naive. Each obstacle we face in life becomes a lesson and our personality, character and the way we think forever. Over time we develop certain perspectives to living life which may contradict with others. But, are the things which make us unique as an individual and it guides our fate towards its ultimate destination. While we may be unaware of our fate but we are still an individual capable of making our own choices. It is this realization of our own self-conscience that starts our journey and only by each and every obstacle we face, we can gain enough experience to tackle our future barriers. This concept has been the main goal behind making each and every song in this EP.”

The band also took the responsibility of assembling the EP together from scratch in their own home studio, and to cull our curiosity they also shared the gear used on the EP:

We employed a very minimalistic approach towards the recording process and we never stock up on more than what we need. We used for vocals and SM57, for guitars an Ibanez rg321 with EMG pickups and Ernie Ball strings; for bass: Ibanez BTB 6string and Superior drummer”.

The reformed 5-piece who found their new drummer Joy Singh right at the nick of time, a few days before they were supposed to go onstage for the The Abomination gig.Tentatively to be released in or around the 3rd week of May, Evil Conscience are planning to play an intimate album release gig with local bands and a surprise act from Darjeeling doing the honors of supporting the Tech Death crew. Here’s wishing EP a successful foray into their cornucopia of musical technicality and anatomical brutality.

  • Interview With Animal As Leaders

    May 2 • Interviews • 6573 Views

For members at the Animals As Leaders camp, 2014 is turning out to be a rather fruitful year (not inspired from album art) with the release of ‘Joy of Motion’ and with extensive touring following the release. Also Tosin recently getting nominated for “Best Shredder” for the Golden Gods, reaching the 23rd spot on the Billboard top 200 and Matt featuring on the May issue of DRUM! Magazine just adds so many cherries on top.We had a chat with Javier from the band and discussed the album ‘Joy Of Motion’ and whats been happening at the AAL camp

    Animal As Leaders

    Animal As Leaders

Metalbase INDIA: Hey Javier, so the Joy of Motion is almost is almost here! How do you feel right now?

Javier: I’m very happy how “The Joy of Motion” came out. I believe it’s some of our best work.

MBI: What do you think changed, or rather develop in the band with the whole recording process and the shift from Prosthetic to Sumerian Records for this album?

Javier: A lot has developed and changed. First off, Matt Garstka is in the band and playing with him definitely pushed the band further both musically and technically. Also, the sound and process of each album is different considering that different people produced each album.

MBI: You released Weightless in November 2011 and then toured extensively in Europe and North America in support of the release. How was that tour for the band?

Javier: We toured a whole bunch after Weightless came out. We were fortunate enough to get several support tours that really helped the band grow. We have gotten to tour with bands like Between the Buried and Me, Meshuggah, Thrice, and Dillinger Escape Plan.

    Animal As Leaders Live

MBI: So you just started endorsing Carvin guitars (that shiny blue one). Ibanez to Carvin, how did that happen?

Javier: I’ve always been a fan of Carvin guitars as well as Ibanez. I wanted to come up with a custom design that I knew Carvin would be able to do since they are a smaller company than Ibanez and more flexible with their designs. I reached out to Carvin to try out some of their guitars and shortly after I switched officially. Although Ibanez is a great company, definitely excited about my future with Carvin.

MBI: What was Tosin’s routine for practise while he was the Atlanta Institute of Music? And how did Misha Mansoor (Periphery) agree to co-write, produce and record the album?

Javier: I have no clue what his practice routine was during his time at AIM, I was living in DC producing hip hop during that time. As for how Misha decided? Well, we paid him. Heheh. Although he is a friend, we feel his talent is extremely valuable and we were stroked to work with him again.

MBI: Why did the band choose to Work with Misha Mansoor again on the Joy of Motion?

Javier: Misha had an integral part in creating the sound of Animals as Leaders. There were elements from the first album that we wanted to bring back so we decided to work with Misha for some of the songs. Ironically, the song that’s getting most attention from the new album is ‘Physical Education’ which was co-written by Diego Farias of Volumes and the album was produced by Adam Getgood of Periphery.

MBI: The new Ibanez TAM 100 has the DiMarzio Ionizer pickups. Wasn’t Tosin using the EMG 808X before?

Javier:  It’s been a while since we have used EMGs. We have them in some of our guitars but we have been sculpting our tones using DiMarzio pickups for the last couple of years.

    Joy Of Motion

    Joy Of Motion

MBI: Matt Garska played for the Gokh Bi System (an African Hip Hop group) while he was at the Berklee College of Music and then he joined AAL after moving to LA. How does he comment on his versatility and its investment in the band? How did going to Berklee help?

Javier: I’m sure Berklee taught him a huge amount. He is definitely the most educated musician in the band and his rhythmic vocabulary is through the roof. Couldn’t be happier with him in the band.

MBI: How did Navene Koperweis (ex AAL) and Diego Farias (Volumes) contribute to in the making of the Joy of Motion?

Javier: Navene produced probably 99% of all the electronic elements of the album. Considering he was previously in the band, we knew he would get the appropriate aesthetic for the music. Diego helped by co-writing three songs with us (Physical Education, Crescent, and Mind-Spun).

MBI: Did Tosin accidentally ponder upon a book of riff-writing knowledge during his regular meditation episodes? How else did the whole process of writing the self-titled debut happen? The style of playing was completely unheard of back in 2009 (except maybe with Sikth or even Meshuggah) but even then AAL was very different.

Javier: He’s actually born in Krypton, like Superman. He took lessons from Superman’s father which was the fastest and strongest shredder in all of Krypton. When Krypton was destroyed he vowed to one day become the gnarliest shredder on the tiny planet of Earth. On his quest he discovered Meshuggah, Dream Theater, and Yngwie Malmsteen. He absorbed their super powers and then became THE ABASINATOR!!!!!!

MBI: A lot of bands today are free streaming their albums in full. Is this the new way to go? Do you think it affects record sales or is the reach that you get of more significance to the band?

Javier:  I’m sure it does affect the record sales, but I feel it’s better to stream it and supply proper links where one can purchase the album rather than some random kid posting it without any connection or links to the band’s website, web store, or record label. People will always find a way to download the album if they really want to. People will also find a way to support you if they really believe in you and appreciate your work.

Escher’s Knot release track ‘The Grand Design’

May 2 • Indian News, News, Releases, Reviews • 2542 Views

Started out as an experimental project in July 2009, Escher’s Knot is an Experimental/Progressive Metal band from Chennai, India. The band is constitutes of renowned members from bands such as IIIrd Sovereign, Theorized, Ston’d and Blood & Iron. The band is back with a new single called ‘The Grand Design’ off of their new upcoming album. The new single The Grand Design turns out to be a surprisingly catchy progressive track which is already on its path to score huge miles.

    Escher's Knot

    Escher’s Knot

The 3:40 minute long track kick-starts with a diverse melodic riffing followed up by the fast paced drumming and relentless growl reflecting a soulful progressive sound right away. The track sure does give listeners a comeback vibe of their previous track Mayaan Calendar, yet with a greater speed. Right from the opening till the last second of the track, progressive sound of never ending aggressive energy captivates the ears. The band’s trademark death-core elements oscillate to and fro throughout the song with brief melodic breakdowns at intervals. The track wraps up in with a 23 second non-stop energy growl delivered by Abhijith. In all, the latest single is definitely a major step up from the band’s earlier release, and is by far the most mature track. We are excited about the upcoming album and hopefully the rest of the tracks will be as massive as the single.

Old School Death metallers from the Capital, Fragarak are due to play their first international tour next few days. The 5-piece outfit who released their debut full length “Crypts of Dissimulation” last year to rave reviews from across the globe, are going live on the following dates:

Fragarak to play two shows in China

Fragarak to play two shows in China

When Fragarak came out with “Cryps of Dissimulation” last year, the debut album boasted of only 6 tracks but did they prove the numbers game wrong and how. The band has played with fellow Prog Death Metallers Winter Gate and Doom lords Djinn and Miskatonic and other Indian Old School Metal heavyweights just to name a few, including stints at Entombed Fest in Mumbai and the Transcending Obscurity fest a few months back.

“Just when you think you have heard it all, there comes a band which redefines one’s perspective, in a good way. Therefore, it comes as no surprise when Fragarak, barely in its 2nd year, emerges with a stellar debut” was what I had to say when I heard Fragarak the first time, and it did not take Solomon’s wisdom to predict what they would have accomplished by year tres!

    Fragarak on their China Tour:
“Initially we were in talks with Promoters in China as we were interested in playing there. After the release of our record, they eventually heard us and got back to us with a mini tour proposal . This was way back in January. We are glad that finally things did shape up.

We are aware of a few fine acts in the China scene namely Explosicum, Narakam and Screaming Savior. And also not to mention Impiety from Singapore. We are really looking forward to sharing stages with them now

The band is planning to do a few more shows/tour in support of their debut release through early 2015.Straight after the China tour Fragarak would be heading to Thane to play the Transcending Obscurity Fest.
