TBT: The Hobos released eight track self titled album
Followers of the Indian rock scene will remember the name ‘The Hobos’ as one of the bands who were very visible during the revival of the scene early on but then by and by they had faded. Good news is however that they are back with a bang with their first full length album and we caught up with the Kolkata act about their new release and plans for the revival of The Hobos.
Upon being asked about the new album, they were clearly buzzing, they said “This album has eight songs. Each of the songs depicts different issues and our musical perspective on them. For example, the song “Ballad before Butchery” is about oppression and atrocities against peasants and how their voices of dissent are shut sometimes even by gruesome brutality. It starts off with a violin which sounds more like a cry than a melancholic symphony; which is perfect considering the theme of the song. Then there is “Trance of Mahakal”, which is a tribute to Lord Shiva, the Holy Shaman.
It talks about His calmness and charisma, His fearlessness and fury. The music is based on raga Puriya Dhanashree, and the mood of the song changes as it progresses. There is “Kurukshetra” which is themed on the great epic and its relevance today in our own personal Kurukshetras. There are songs like Escape and Broken Home, which are about disconnect and disenchantment.
Endless Trauma and Lust talk about the dormant demons we have within us and Honor is a tribute to all the unknown soldiers who have laid down their lives for our pride, our honour. ”
The album explores several subgenres but we should not go into jargon rather give this album a listen, they too have pointed out, that lyrically this album charts their journey which has now lasted for more than a decade, about the theme of the album, they said “ Each song in the album is about a different theme or issue,as mentioned earlier. We have expressed our anger and satire for certain issues through some of the songs while in others
we have tried to connect reality through fantasy and mystique.Through our music we seek more to “Engage” than “Entertain”
The Hobos were also a part of the generation which was instrumental in the rise of the rock scene and festivals like Hornbill. When asked about how the scene has changed, they pointed out “The crowd always welcomed original music and that laid the mantra for todays huge rock and metal movement in India.
With so many foreign brands in India, today the scene looks promising for Indian rock and metal, there are die-hard rock and metal music lovers in India ”
So pick up this album and give it a listen
