Well where did this come from? Brutal death metal as a genre is often maligned because of the similarity of bands within its domain, and when the dreaded slam rears its head I often hear slogans against it akin to a group of government officials coursing down the streets in India demanding a raise. I agree that in most of the cases the argument of brutal death metal being stale, not creative and mechanical have some justification but once in a while comes a release which pays homage to what bands like suffocation started and has been carried on by the likes of Inveracity, Skinless and Dawn of Demise.

Human infection’s sophomore release is one battering ram which pummels through the listener from point A to B in a straight line. You hear what is exactly in there – brutal death metal. Human infection’s first album, Infest to Ingest, to put it fairly can be bracketed under the section “yet another brutal death metal album”. However, in Curvatures of Time they draw inspiration from pure old school metal in the vein of Suffocation and then follow it up with generous amounts of US OSDM. Also mixing it with the modern approach of brutal tech death, Curvatures of Time is more than enough to satiate fans of both genres. Celestial fires off the album into hyper speed as its riffs strongly remind us of Suffocation. Devastation is laced with razor sharp Deicide riffs. Slam makes its appearance in Ex-Nihilo and doesn’t overstay its tenure. In fact, the slam parts are not the dominating factor but complement the heavy OSDM base. Sacrificial Skies tinkers with structures which Morbid Angel aimed for in Domination and Gateways to Annihilation before Suffocation’s strong influence cuts through lesser being. Hence, the influence of the forefathers scream loudly, but what Human Infection do very neatly here is package these important influences in a brutal tech death environment rather tastefully. Essentially, when you put on the record it sounds great. Musically this holds its ground first and foremost, followed by the recognition of past influences. Needless to say, fans of Suffocation and OSDM in general will appreciate this. Short and brutal, Curvatures of Time signifies Human Infection’s leap from an average first album to a crushing second. The band brings their A game to the party.

RATING : 4/5 (This mighty tome will resurrect the dead, but it may not turn lead to gold)

With only two day to go until the release of Eluveitie’s New Album Origins, we present to you the second video from their upcoming album: “The Call Of The Mountains”!
The band says, “This is a song that has a very personal connection to all of us – it is a song about the long searched-for destination at the end of an epic journey, the journey of the Celts who were to become the Helvetians: it is a song about our mystical, majestical and unparalleled alps. We shot the video in a fitting, beautiful (and sometimes vertigo-inducing) scenery, and we hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did making it for you! “

  • Yonsample to release their full length album later this year

Jul 29 • Indian News, News, Releases • 5068 Views

Kolkata based Progressive metal band Yonsample have had a pretty staid looking Facebook page recently what with updates going back to 2012. It was only on 25th May of this year that they finally put up a video update. The video shows the band jamming in the studios, working on the production of a new album. This comes as sweet news to all the long time fans of the band.We talk to Yonsample to find out more about this forthcoming album.

Quizzed about their long sabbatical and the reason behind it, Yonsample told us, “We stopped playing live and were inactive for more than a year. I guess somewhere along the line we were not really convinced about the stuff we were playing at gigs and thought we could play music which is more fun to us. Hence the decision.” When it wasn’t working out, the band gave themselves an ultimatum. “ ‘Third world metchul band problems’ occurred and everyone got busy with their own lives. Apart from a few songwriting sessions here and there, nothing much happened during this period. That is until Feb-March 14, when we decided it’s about time we made a record, or disband. So everyone took a break from what they were doing, and we started jamming again.” they say.

The band has been in the studio since April working on a new album that they expect to put out by August or September. As part of preparations for the recording of the album, the whole band moved in to guitarist Anirban’s basement and started recording scratch tracks and demos. “We have literally grown up together as musicians, and as individuals as well, during the last 5-6 years. So we had a great time living together and writing music 24×7 after the hiatus. We were also jamming and writing together in our rehearsal space. We’ve uploaded a couple of videos which were shot during this time at youtube.com/yonsampleTV .”

On production duty for the album is Kolkata based producer Rhitabrata Kar who has previously produced the band’s ‘Paraphernalia’ EP in 2010 and is a close friend of the band. Kar informs us that we can expect some great music from the album. Describing the recording process, he says, ”Working with these guys is pretty challenging as well as fun. The song writing is very much non generic and that’s what makes it super interesting, learning something new everyday.” The band share Kar’s enthusiasm about the recording and themselves seem pretty excited about working with him. “We are really excited with how this record has started to sound like and we all are trying to give our best. We’ve just started laying down the guitar tracks with our dear friend Rhitabrata Kar, who has been like family to us throughout the years and whom we consider to be a part of the band as much as any one of us.” they tell us.There has been a gap of four years between the band’s last release and the recording of this album. There must have been a sense of evolution and growth that the band must have found within their sound and themselves. Kar tells us more, “Paraphernalia was released in late 2010 and this is 2014 so there’s an obvious musical maturity in the songs The overall sound has evolved quite a bit too.

Talking about their evolution, the band say “Our previous release was the very first tracks written by this band and which we were playing live in 2010-11. We wanted to release those before we started writing new tunes. This album is more like the material we would love to play live and have fun together, while maintaining the listenability aspect of the songs, which I think is considered by every one of us with great importance.” The production too has evolved from their early days, “Production wise, it is DIY as always, but things have improved quite a lot since then. For example, Paraphernalia was us plugging in our instruments straight into an audio interface in Rhitabrata’s bedroom. Who has since gotten himself a degree from SAE Chennai and now owns a studio, where we have mic’d up a tube amp and tracking the guitars

The band aren’t sure about the number of tracks on the album though they concede that there will probably be 10-12. A whole album full of tracks from an extremely promising act that has been lying dormant for a long time seems like a huge treat for fans. Here’s hoping that that Facebook page overflows with more updates very soon.

  • P.L.F. – Ultimate Whirlwind of Incineration

Mohammad Kabeer reviews the new record from P.L.F. titled Ultimate Whirlwind of Incineration, released via Blastasfuk Records.

    a4054802304_10

    Artwork by Daniel “Sawblade” Shaw

When it comes to mixing Grindcore and Thrash Metal, it is pretty obvious that no one does it better than PLF, of course there are other bands that do it, but they don’t really have that universal appeal that this band has. They appeal to both Grindcore veterans and casual Grind fans, as well as, punks and metalheads alike. The fact that two of my friends who didn’t know much about Grind were absolutely spellbound by their last album Devious Persecution and wholesale slaughter is enough to warranty this fact. Can the same be said about this release? Let’s find out.

PLF or Pulverizing lethal  force,  is a three piece from Houston texas consisting of  Dave  Callier(Vocals,Guitars)  Matt(bass) and Bryan Fajardo(Drums). The band continues to retain their core sound, which consists of  fast thrashy  guitar riffs and the extremely rapid yet  very  precise drumming of the ever talented Bryan Fajardo(the George Kollias of grind in my opinion). But there is one thing that makes this album different from their previous releases as this time around these guys have decided to put in some old school death metal into the mix as well , which is exemplified best in the guitars  with the really fast tremolos pinned beneath the flaming wreckage.  There’s that good old raw classic death metal distortion that reminds me of 90’s American death metal, which can be heard everywhere but more so in the last part of Subconscious Introspection in which heavy palm muted chugs are accompanied by skank beats. The band mixes all of these three styles perfectly blending them all together into one and not making each standing out like sore thumbs. Although these alterations don’t really change their sound a lot, it sure does lend this album a slightly darker edge and a tad more emotional depth to their performance.

All of this makes Ultimate Whirlwind of Incineration a great follow up, that will continue to appeal to different types of music fans. I for one thoroughly enjoyed it and will go back to it as soon as this review is done, which is now!

P.S. Old school Grind fans are sure to lap this up.
