Sep 18 • Indian News, Interviews, News, Releases • 6019 Views

Death Metal veterans Third Sovereign have been busy in Aizawl working on their next full length release. This would follow the releases Destined To Suffer (,2007) and Deprived Serenity (2008). The crowd witnessed the massive sound Third Sovereign are working on , at Outrage Festival and this year’s Rolling stone metal awards . Excited would be an understatement for the apprehension listeners have for the new Sovereign album. We sat down with vocalist Vedant and discussed the sound on the new album and all things Third Sovereign

    Third Sovereign

    Third Sovereign

Metalbase India: Third Sovereign has been on a hiatus since long now, and now you guys are back together. When did you guys decide to start again from scratch and build up the idea for a new record?
Vedant: Well…most of the new tunes had been written and composed in the period between 2008-2009 which means that the ideas and concepts had already started to take shape during that period itself. When I joined back in 2012,there were couple of new songs which were given to me as templates to work on. So, basically the whole concept for the new record was already there on our hands and we were just waiting for that perfect timeframe to start our tracking which eventually happened last year in July when the band entered its newly constructed studio (Vortex Live ‘N’ Loud) in Aizawl to start work on pre-production.

MBI: One of the most monumental moments for the band must be opening for Dying Fetus in Shillong Open Air. Tell us about the experience.
Vedant: It was great! The best part was talking to John (Gallagher) and Sean (Beasley) and getting to know them. Such nice and humble people which gives you an idea of how they have managed to continue after all these years.

MBI: TS recently played at the Rolling Stones Metal Awards after almost 6 years. Did it lead to any nostalgia?
Vedant: It was actually great to meet old friends, hang around and have fun. Mumbai crowd is always great to play to and got to watch The Down Troddence whose musical presentation on stage was a sight to behold. These guys are really good at what they do and will go a long way!!

MBI: How was playing with the other veterans like Nigambodh, Fragarak, Aberrant, Colossal Figures, Eschers Knot, Zygnema and Undying Inc in the Outrage Festival?
Vedant: I don’t have words to describe Outrage. Probably the best gig we have played so far this year. Everything about the festival was excellent starting from the sound which was MASSIVE, the turnout which was easily one of the best attendance I have witnessed in recent times and so encouraging to see all the bands who performed brilliantly and played there hearts out!!

MBI: After Destined To Suffer, Sovereign’s new album will presumably be released this year. Our fans are dying for some information.
Vedant: The songs are more challenging, a lot of it faster than the older materials, and the sound is more raw, mean and brutal. We really thank all our fans for bearing with us and keeping there patience for this one!

    Third Sovereign

MBI: Since a release will be made after a long time, do we expect something totally new from TS?
Vedant: I will just say that it will be Pure, Unadulterated and Honest “in your face” Death Metal that will kick your balls!!

MBI: Any record deals on the cards?
Vedant: Not at the moment! Time will tell……

MBI: What are the lyrical and musical inspirations of the band, and have they been incorporated in the new album?
Vedant: My lyrics revolve around a plethora of visions that I have which I use accordingly. Most of the musical projection comes from Benja and Reuben worked upon at these rehearsals between them. We listen to different musical styles, but then having said that the core of the IIIrd Sovereign sound is pretty much intact with it’s own brand.

MBI: What are the plans of the band apart from the new release, till the end of 2014?
Vedant: To play and promote the new record as much as possible and to explore unchartered territories.

MBI: Any message for the fans?
Vedant: You guys are our inner-strength and thanks for being with us through our thick and thin! Keep it real…Until’ Mortality!! Cheers!!

  • Cropsy Maniac – Shear Terror EP

Dipankar Mohanty reviews the debut EP from Cropsy Maniac titled Shear Terror, released via Deadbeat Media.

Boredom is a bitch. Ain’t it? Especially when listening to serious metal all the time. So why not inject a little something which lies at the opposite end of said seriousness?  Cropsy Maniac, featuring Kevin Reece of Blood Freak is just the antidote for your miserable lives. Don’t be morose all the time and no need to put on your bullet belt; a pair of slippers and underwear will do just fine although I’ll not hold you back if you want to go for the Spasm look. Cropsy Maniac can be served as bed tea, an evening snack or as an aperitif. Its debut EP ‘Shear Terror’ clocks in at 9 minutes and delivers pummeling and nasty (tasty!) grindcore at neck breaking intensity. Understandably, the Blood Freak influence is pretty prominent here and it also features a downtuned production which is great for this sort of release because it has influences from 80s-early 90s death metal. This is some great grindcore, with tons of blast beat goodness and crazy riffing. Quick and dirty is what this EP is, although I would like to substitute “dirty” with “refreshing”! It also features a cover of a Haemorrhage’s ‘Dawn in the Rotting Paradise’. This is highly recommended for fans of Nasum, Terrorizer, Brutal Truth and Squash Bowels etc. As this should take care of your depression problems, the next thing you can do is buy the CD. Consider it as fees for your treatment and yeah, you can run over a few people when driving.

    Rating 4/5

(This mighty tome will resurrect the dead, but it may not turn lead to gold)

  • The Ganesh Talkies release full length album ‘In Technicolor’

Sep 17 • Indian News, News, Releases • 4103 Views

Kolkata kitschy rock group The Ganesh Talkies are finally out with a full length album. This is great news for the indie folk as they have been belting out hit singles at sold out gigs for quite some time now. The band too is stoked about their release and they found the process of making this album a growing up experience, ‘Recording this album has enriched us as musicians because this has been a learning process for us, starting from more efficient songwriting to better tonal and groove sensibilities’

    Album Artwork for In Technicolour

    Album Artwork for ‘In Technicolor’

The album “In Technicolor ” will be having some of the popular Ganesh Talkies songs like Item Song and Style along with new hits such as Dancing Dancing which they have been playing at gigs for almost a better part of the last six months, ‘There is a reworked version of Item Song and a new version of The Fan in this album, which were also a part of the EP. Along with songs like Style, Disco Daze, Dancing! Dancing! and Wonder Woman, we have a few completely new songs which we are the most excited about. You will either love it or hate it, there’s going to be no in-between’. Special mention also needs to go to the album art for this which comes with a 3D album cover and back which is rather trippy, the artwork has been done by Opashona Ghosh.

The band believes that their different sound is definitely a plus for them as they set out for a nationwide album release tour ‘There is a good side as well as a bad side to having a rather different sound. While people like us because we sound like no other band they’ve heard or seen before, it’s also a bad thing because sometimes we’re just not their cup of tea. But that’s okay with us, we don’t really think too much about our sound, our song-making happens quite organically.’

After conquering blueFROG the band is set to play gig in Kolkata on the 19th September at Jamsteady at Princeton Club.

Get ready to get your dance on !!

  • Metal quartet Elemental is one to look out for

    Sep 17 • Indian News, News • 3573 Views

When you throw in seven bands in a lineup, you know the metal scene is desperate for attention. Every band wants to get out there and play – even if it’s just a mostly-covers set with favorites like Cannibal Corpse, Pantera and what have you. Between the blistering riffs and guttural growls, what a metalhead really wants from a gig like this is something that sticks – something that doesn’t just make you want to second-guess which international band is currently being worshipped on stage in the form of a half-hour setlist.

    Elemental

    Elemental

What most of us want is something that’ll punch us in the gut so hard, we’d be amazed at the shot. That’s what Indore/Bhopal death metallers Elemental bought to stage at a recent gig in Mumbai. For just a quartet, Elemental took the venue by storm, not stopping for one moment – well there was a call for drinking water for the members at some point, but you get what I mean. Elemental were (excuse the pun) in their element – not copying any band, not wearing any single band’s influence on their sleeve. Their style was clearly mix and match – from the pig squeals to the explosive bass breakdowns. Anchal Bhargava, the vocalist and manager of Elemental, was sporting a Whitechapel t-shirt (a pat on the back for anyone who could what any black T-shirt read in that dank, poorly-lit performance area at the venue), which clearly showed he wasn’t a guy to have a subgenre argument with.

The bigger difference that set Elemental aside was that they were perhaps the only band to play an all-original setlist. Not to take anything away from Providence’s massively entertaining, wrecking-ball time capsule through the best of metal during their set – they covered everything from Maiden to Slipknot – but Elemental probably won themselves a lot of new fans that night. Anchal and his band members were just nailing every song, rampaging through riffs that made me wince, but shaking the floor with their breakdowns. A quick glance across the (still-dark) venue showed that most heads were nodding at varying levels of speed – from the amazed young kid to the journalists and scenesters. And surely Elemental saw that. Their second gig in Mumbai so far, their Facebook page shows they’ve got a few more venues to lay to waste – first in their hometown in Indore. Do yourself a favour, get yourself kicked in the balls – go watch Elemental. Considering their album, Creation of the Damned, won’t be out until later this year, it’s best to experience their savagery live. If you escape unscathed, let us know how.
