What Makes Us Human Is Obsolete

Wacken Open Air 2012, Inferno Metal Festival 2013, a couple of RSMAs, a sold out debut full-length- a meager introduction to the band from Mumbai with fans who can go on a killing spree for their very own buntais in Zygnema. Having released their debut four years after incarnating a groove-thrash band and garnering mostly positive reviews from across the globe, this helluva band is ready with their next full-length studio album, interestingly titled, ‘What Makes Us Human Is Obsolete

    Zygnema

    Zygnema

Juggling between jobs and gigs, the band has been fervently awaiting the album launch and the big day is nigh. Their next one involves a lot of people from various studios and big names who have contributed to culminate the work on the album to perfection. “We started tracking our instruments in September 2014 at Arbit Random studios along with Tejas Narayanan. Jimmy recorded vocals along with Sahil Makhija and the whole album was mixed and mastered at Mothership Productions. We wanted to do something special for our audience on this album hence the last minute tracking happened at Amplitude Recording Studio.”

Their last album ‘Born Of Unity‘ was sold out not long after they had released its physical copies but many fans complained of not being able to lay their hands on one. The band intends to retail the physical copies and sell them extensively at launch gigs and will be utilizing online platforms like Instamojo, OkListen, iTunes, Bandcamp, Pandora etc. to make available the digital downloads for fans here and across the seven seas.

The album was earlier scheduled to release in December of last year but the release date moved to Jan/Feb of 2015 because the band were “famished when it came to coming up with ideas for their album cover.” To add to the woes, the band’s sound engineer Akash Sawant was caught up with work but never failed to provide the much needed impetus to the band to complete a beast of an album. Finally, with an artwork by Reuben Bhattacharya from Visual Amnesia, the album will be launched this month.

Fans can expect nothing less than a masterpiece with quite a few experiments on sound as well as collaborations.“There are some moments in few of our songs where we’ve implemented Carnatic rhythmic patterns. What interests us the most is the rhythmic patterns. We are really digging it and will work more towards it.

They also have high hopes with regards an official video in support to the album. The band said, “We just need to collect enough cash and get our concept right to ensure one the best music videos to have come out of this country.

The bigger a band is, the more one starts expecting out of them. We are expecting nothing less from Zygnema. “We have really worked hard as a band and individually as musicians to up our game with our instruments. We have put in a lot of efforts learning and applying stuff on this record. Personally I’d say that this album is slightly more relentless than the previous one. We are freaking proud of what we came up with and cant wait to share it with everyone.

Upon asking if the fans can expect any bombshells in the Album launch gig, the band was terse enough. “You don’t go to war knowing where you will find land mines or get bombed. You got to take it the way it comes.

The band is all set to launch their assault and continue their tour with Delhi being the next stop.

    Delhi – 17th June
    Bangalore – 26th June
    Chennai – 28th June
    Ujjain – 3rd July
    Indore – 4th July
    Bhopal. – 5th July

Make it to the above shows and witness Zygnema unleash this beast.

  • 2Stroke tour featuring Skrat and Aswekeepsearching

First episode of 2Stroke tour about to kick off

Jun 15 • All Updates, Indian News, Tours • 3421 Views

2Stroke, a much awaited multi city tour, featuring ‘Skrat’ and ‘aswekeepsearching’, is about to begin on the 17th of June. The first edition of the 2Stroke will run through five days, encompassing five cities – Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

Uddipan Sarmah, who is also a member of aswekeepsearching is the key force behind the tour. According to Uddipan, “The tour will span genres and attempt to put together on each edition two sets of artists that complement each other either in similarity or as an interesting contrast.” A multi city tour is every band’s dream and according to the head organizer, “The bands and the organisers are united in their belief that non-corporate sponsored, DIY touring is within the realms of possibility and sustainability.

The key hurdles in organizing multi city tours, in a still emerging scene like India are “Financial backing and logistics”, says Uddipan, adding that, “Every venue is interested in hosting outstation artists, but the only issue that sometimes holds them back is the logistics. Also, not all venues do live events all days in a week, they have particular days assigned for live shows. It gets hard for an organiser to plan consecutive shows on a tour. But I am happy, the venues I am working with has supported us with the days we wanted. Specially Hard Rock Cafe Hyderabad, who is hosting the show on Saturday. This is actually a great support”. Exploring the touring scene in India on the lines of Europe and the United States have long been at the back of Uddipan’s mind. It was financial constraints that pulled him back, until Bengaluru based music enthusiast Ramakrishnan Krishnan (Ram), who has been supporting Indian Indie music in his own way, decided to invest in the idea.

The 2Stroke tour has already generated some buzz in the Indie music circuit and fans from all over the country are taking note. The Indie circuit is growing everyday and Uddipan gave a straightforward reply when asked about the Indie scene, “Everyone needs to take ownership of the indie scene and make sure they come to events with their hordes. Let’s get more people to follow the Indian indie music. A fan base is built, not expected. We are trying our best to reach more people. On our journey, if everyone gets along, I am sure we will together make a difference.”
Plans have already been brought in place for a second episode of the 2Stroke tour, which is tentatively scheduled at the end of August this year. “More details will be out soon”, says Uddipan.

Aswekeepsearching’s brand of music will be a treat for the fans throughout the tour. When asked about the band’s plans post the tour, Uddipan said, “We are going straight to the studio. Year end, we will be coming up with a full length album. Excited!” Sure, exciting times ahead for the Indie music scene.

  • Sennheiser launches the first edition of Sennheiser Top 50 in partnership with Amazon

Jun 10 • All Updates, Contests, Indian News • 3321 Views

The Sennheiser Top 50 battle is a search for promising young musicians who deserve worldwide recognition and is open to all the emerging or semi-professional bands of the country, this is India’s digital contest inviting bands of all genres – pop, rock, fusion, classic or blues.

The contest is divided in 4 phases – First the bands need to upload a track (a cover or original composition) in their own music style. Their entries will be filtered by an internal Sennheiser jury, determining their spot among the shortlisted bands. If the band makes it to the next level, they will appeal for online voting generated by their fans, which would account for 40% of the weightage and the 60% weightage would be given to the Jury’s decision to help them reach the top 100. The top 100 bands will then submit their music videos and answer a detailed questionnaire about their band. They can even upload snippets of their rehearsals and recordings online to attract more fans and catch the judges’ attention. And the final 50 will be narrowed down and ranked by the Sennheiser artists.

So far, around 200 bands have registered and more entries are expected to follow in the coming days. We spoke to Sennheiser regarding the verity and eligibility of the panel of judges and advocating it, they said, “Our panel of judges are multi-faceted versatile musicians across genres.” The judges have been long time present and rocking the local indie scene and have composed music for Bollywood and consequently made worldwide audiences don hats to them. The perks of the competition are innumerable. The first rank winner will get a 2 years endorsement deal from Sennheiser India. The band winning the recording session will have a day to record a track and understand what goes on in recording an album. Ashish Manchanda at Flying Carpet Productions would be the one the band works with . Apart from this, The Evolution wireless D1 set, Amazon cash vouchers and Sennheiser headphones will be bestowed on the winners and the runner-ups.

Admitting that the independent scene is exploding and many talents are left unnoticed and are not given the opportunity they deserve, the company devised this competition to bring these deserving bands a chance to be on the forefront. With everything transparent and big things on stake, the competition doesn’t look shabby at all for every band who has been waiting for an opportunity.

With the independent music scene growing Sennheiser believes that it has much to offer to this growing music scene “With the amount of activity in the scene currently, it’s becoming a tough proposition to ignore for any brand. This music scene is going to grow a lot bigger soon as we’re counting on a growing population of young people who consume hours of music every day

The contest registrations end tomorrow so head over to here  and file in to test your luck and competence.

    Good luck!

  • The Minerva Conduct enters Pre-Production of their debut album

    Jun 10 • Indian News • 2700 Views

The Minerva Conduct, albeit just over 7 months old, have taken the Indian Prog scene by storm. Initiated as a brainchild of guitarist Prateek Rajagopal, Ashwin Shriyan (Bass/Synth/Production) and Nishith Hegde (Guitars), both were later inducted into the band. This Mumbai based Instrumental Prog band recently parted ways with their drummer Ranbir ‘Kpr’ Kapoor and are still auditioning drummers. Although the band is new, Pratheek has been composing music for this project over 2.5-3 years with the aim of transcending the boundaries of Progressive Metal.

The band is poised to perform at the highly anticipated- 8th edition of ‘Control Alt Delete – Survive This‘ on the minerva conduct band membersJune 13. “Apart from a good set-list of 5-6 songs, the fans are also in for a nice surprise,” says founder, Pratheek. Having recently played at The Rolling Stones Metal Awards 2015 (the band’s debut gig in Mumbai), their new sounds were acknowledged with a fantastic reception from the crowd. As Pratheek put it – “It was a great start to an even greater journey.”

The much awaited debut album by this experimental band has reached the pre-production stage and the band is all set to spread their unique sound to the masses. Prateek, the composer, also states that The Minerva Conduct is still contemplating the vocalist/instrumental approach. For now, they’re taking it as it comes.
The band’s single “End Creation” also appears on the “Six New Releases You Should Checkout” list by Rolling Stones India. The song has Ashwin Shriyan doing some vocals on it.

India has recently seen an increase in the interest towards progressive metal and now boasts of a number of artists in that genre. Pratheek believes that the increase is because the wave/trend globally is progressive metal over thrash/death/heavy metal, currently. Every sub-genre has it’s phase, and this soon shall pass as well.

The Minverva conduct is a very exciting band and their upcoming album is certainly one to look out for. Watch the band perform some of their newer tracks on 13th June at Control Alt Delete 8.0
