When it comes to mixing Grindcore and Thrash Metal, it is pretty obvious that no one does it better than PLF, of course there are other bands that do it, but they don’t really have that universal appeal that this band has. They appeal to both Grindcore veterans and casual Grind fans, as well as, punks and metalheads alike. The fact that two of my friends who didn’t know much about Grind were absolutely spellbound by their last album Devious Persecution and wholesale slaughter is enough to warranty this fact. Can the same be said about this release? Let’s find out.
PLF or Pulverizing lethal force, is a three piece from Houston texas consisting of Dave Callier(Vocals,Guitars) Matt(bass) and Bryan Fajardo(Drums). The band continues to retain their core sound, which consists of fast thrashy guitar riffs and the extremely rapid yet very precise drumming of the ever talented Bryan Fajardo(the George Kollias of grind in my opinion). But there is one thing that makes this album different from their previous releases as this time around these guys have decided to put in some old school death metal into the mix as well , which is exemplified best in the guitars with the really fast tremolos pinned beneath the flaming wreckage. There’s that good old raw classic death metal distortion that reminds me of 90’s American death metal, which can be heard everywhere but more so in the last part of Subconscious Introspection in which heavy palm muted chugs are accompanied by skank beats. The band mixes all of these three styles perfectly blending them all together into one and not making each standing out like sore thumbs. Although these alterations don’t really change their sound a lot, it sure does lend this album a slightly darker edge and a tad more emotional depth to their performance.
All of this makes Ultimate Whirlwind of Incineration a great follow up, that will continue to appeal to different types of music fans. I for one thoroughly enjoyed it and will go back to it as soon as this review is done, which is now!
P.S. Old school Grind fans are sure to lap this up.
RATING : 4/5 (This mighty tome will resurrect the dead, but it may not turn lead to gold)
