INTHESHIT/Priapus Split
Our resident man of grind, Mohammad Kabeer talks about the new split by bands INTHSHIT and Priapus, released via Give Praise Records.
For today’s review I guess the sentence that would be most apt would probably be “close but no Cigar” Intheshit was a band that I liked as a listener, but it never really got beyond that, their releases didn’t really have that deep an impact on me to download all their albums or check out their live shows. Priapus on the other hand have been ignored by all the listeners in general, these guys are great at what they do , but somehow have not been able to gain the same attention and popularity that their contemporaries have. Let’s hope this time both these bands find their Cigars.
Intheshit are a grindcore band from Boston, Massachusetts who although on previous releases played some pretty straightforward grind, they seem to change things a little here. This time around Intheshit play some really primal and very spontaneous strain of Grindcore , which literally states “fuck subtlety”. Their style completely negates any sense of dynamics within the genre, songs like A Simple Noose, with their massive double bass loops reminiscent of Pantera’s Primal Concrete Sledge and “Caveman” skank beats is a perfect example of this. Their rather loose song structure reminded me of some of the noisier bands of the genre like Fear of God,Seven minutes of Nausea,Beastial Vomit and Scab Addict. Although this does step up Intheshit’s game to quite an extent, my thoughts on them haven’t really changed all that much.
The next band however proves to be a complete contrast. Hailing from Greensboro North Carolina, Priapus plays their usual style of blisteringly fast yet balanced technical deathgrind. These guys never fail to impress. The two songs move like a speeding bullet train on nitro, with some of the fastest blasts I have heard in grind (watch out Kevin Foley! you have got competition), but despite all this the band is able to maintain a balance by merging the faster dissonance driven parts of the genre, with more simple distorted palm muted guitar riffs which makes for some really great headbanging! Their side is definitely the winner of this split; I really think that a lot of people are missing out on this band. If you are fans of bands like Pig destroyer and Brodequin you will really like this!
