Cast away your tried and tested alt rock flavorings, and find a new home in the atmospheric, prog-laden abyss that is Goddess Gagged, initially a three piece showcase of Bombay’s youngest rock talent and now a full fledged five-piece behemoth. Breathing in influences from all cross sections of nineties rock/metal following up to present day prog kings like Karnivool and Porcupine Tree, these five fantasists find cohesion within layers of intricate guitar work, crushing rhythms, solid bass lines and moody atmospherics worthy of the darkest nights of solitude.

    Goddess Gagged is :
    Siddharth Basrur – Vocals
    Devesh Dayal – Guitar/Vocals
    Arman Menzies – Guitar/Vocals
    Krishna Jhaveri – Bass
    Jeremy D’souza – Drums

    Lyrics:
    I took a step back, I couldn’t breathe
It made me see exactly what I wanted
Getting back to basics, making me sick
    Making me bleed with confusion
    Turning you on

This incessant breathing must be stopped
It’s the only cure I can find that cuts

The silence, thick as the walls you built
Chain me down, I won’t try to escape
    Who said you could stay?
    Who said you could stay?

The silence, thick as the walls you built
    Chain me down
    I won’t try to escape
Watch me play and weigh me down

If breathing was an option would you take it away?
Would you set fire to my lungs again?

    There’s a cure
    There’s a cause
    There’s a flaw
You keep stepping beyond this line you’ve crossed

This track that plays on loop in my head
    Creates an unkind echo
    Stimulates, simulates, stimulates

Your bad behavior will not go unnoticed
    My eyes ache
    They still see

Anthracite release music video for ‘Rap Illusion’

    May 19 • Indian News, Releases • 3891 Views

Mumbai five-piece nu metal band Anthracite have just released a music video for their new single ‘Rap Illusion’ on the 15th of May 2014.

The video is a zero-budget production. The band’s basic thought behind creating this video was to give people a sneak peek into the band members’ lives; how they love to have fun, play, dance and make music together. “The video is exactly all of those things!” says Sahil Deshpande, guitar player of Anthracite.

This is the second music video from the band, the previous being for song ‘Inner Voice’ from their debut album ‘Groove Sandwich’.

The band will be releasing another song ‘Holograms’ very soon, which will hopefully show a different and probably more mature side of the band.

  • Control Alt Delete - The Metal Chapter

A Metal Chapter in Mumbai’s history books

    May 19 • News • 3530 Views

Free CDs/stickers/posters, cheap alcohol, a daan peti, a magazine (titled ‘Bhenchod Madarchod’), bling uncle, a seriously dingy place for a venue, a line up with a good mix of seasoned and new artists representing varied genres, and a gig put up and paid for by people who seriously care for and are a part of the scene. These were the hallmarks of Control ALT Delete v4.0, held in September last year. There was an announcement made at the event about the first ever Metal edition of the crowdfunded gig and the line-up, date and venue are finally out.

Featuring one of the biggest line-ups EVER for a metal event in Mumbai, Control ALT Delete – the Metal Chapter has been greeted with much excitement from metal fans. The likes of Undying Inc, Zygnema, Devoid, Gutslit, Noiseware, Reptilian Death , Providence and Grammy Winning Effort that represent the best of the Indian metal scene make up the insane line up. The collective quality and brutality of the bands on the bill combined with the ‘Pay what you fucking want’ formula have been instrumental in bringing the event the attention it deserves.

Control Alt Delete - The Metal Chapter

Control Alt Delete – The Metal Chapter

We talk to the organisers of Control ALT Delete (CAD) and some of the bands on the bill to find out more about the initiative and what metalheads can look forward to on 1st June.

Control ALT Delete is an event that aims to bring back the live movement to where it belongs -to the artist and the fan.” Says Nikhil Udupa, one of the main organisers behind the gig.

According to the organisers, having at least this one massive gig that does not have any sponsor names attached to it is of prime importance. “An increasing dependence on promoters and sponsors has left everyone involved in the independent artist scenario either complacent or cynical. The whole DIY ethos has gone for a toss and has been replaced by armchair activism and a misplaced sense of entitlement.” Says Udupa, who along with Rishu Singh and Himanshu Vaswani makes up the core team of the event.

Control ALT Delete then, is not merely a gig, it is a movement. One that swears by the involvement and dedication of fans. Udupa explains the idea behind CAD, “It is essentially a crowdfunded movement which involves the whole ecosystem of the independent music scenario in the country to deliver a gig utilizing everyone’s strengths and contributions. It aims to make everyone, right from the fan, to the artist, to the merch retailer a stake holder in the gig.”

The CAD business model is one that hinges on transparency. Post the gig, all the accounts are made public on their social media pages. The organisers are also clear about their stance on profit. “Any money made from the gig post recovering costs is split between all bands equally irrespective of the seniority of the band.” they say.

CAD had its origins in the alt rock scene. Himanshu was the originator of the idea of the ‘pay what you want’ at door scene and had been doing the gig for a couple of years before Nikhil and Rishu came on board, ‘to make it bigger, expand the scope and involve a wider audience.’

Having found its feet in alt rock, the organisers now want to move CAD into the metal sphere. “We are metal fans and it’s been a while since Bombay has seen a big ass metal gig with bands not dictated by ‘the scene’ or subgenre they belong to.”

These guys seem to be true believers in the power of metal music. “Metal to us is one genre that comes closest to the sense of brotherhood and DIY ethos we hope to encourage in this ecosystem. It has a set of devoted fans who truly are about the music they believe in. We get that and would love to be a small cog in the wheel that drives this thought and passion to action.”

The passion and excitement of metal fans in Mumbai has been pouring out in voices of support across social media. But the excitement isn’t limited to fans.

Adhiraj Singh, lead guitarist of Noiseware (who will be debuting two new songs from their upcoming album at the gig) is excited too. “All the bands performing are top notch, the best metal bands in the country. Honestly, I feel a little sorry for the crowd because they’ll have absolutely no breaks. It’s going to be a relentless assault!

The lads from Zygnema praise the organisers. “No organizer will want to shell out money from their own pocket and then ask the audience to pay whatever they want. But these guys have been doing that. Mumbai needed a dose of a great line up and they made it happen.

As for what we can expect from Zygnema at CAD, well, they seem a bit unsure, “We are playing after 7 months. So we ourselves don’t know what to expect. We are planning on playing newer songs and probably release some new merchandise. PROBABLY.”

Sahil Makhija a.k.a Demonstealer, who will be playing the gig with Reptilian Death says “I think the line-up is absolutely ‘TOD PHOD’ as we say in Mumbai and I for one am excited to be part of such a massive event.” He adds, “RD will bring pure unadulterated death metal to the party.

As important as fans are to it, Control ALT Delete-The Metal Chapter means much more to the die-hard metalheads of the city.As Adhiraj explains, “In metal we haven’t had many gigs like this and I hope people turn up so that more such events can happen.

The major deciding factors to attend a gig for most fans have always been line-up and ticket cost. THAT scintillating line-up doesn’t leave you with much choice. The cherry on top is the choice to pay whatever you feel these artists deserve. Turning up for a gig has never been easier.

  • Diamonds in the Rough: The Second Coming

May 17 • International News, Reviews, The Slumbering Ent • 4532 Views

    Diamond1

I bet the TV’s at your home have been going non-stop for the last three days complete with your ‘dummy’s guide to lame celebrations’ by both winners and losers on the streets. This is not me trying to be Mr.Apolitical, it is me trying to balance my sanity with the paranoia that seems to have engulfed the nation. Conducting an election is no minor feat and the Election Commission is the only people i care for at the moment. So lets stay at the middle ground shall we?

Lets do that with some new music. Now this post is about exhuming a series i used to run on my previous website and one where i asked my dear pal Herbert West to inject some of his special solution into.  This was where i recommended(not that mine are of any great value to begin with) a few releases from a particular month of choice, that most likely may have missed your radar. But due several time constraints i do so in a very cursory manner. The success of the album thus depends entirely on the listener’s curiosity.

Now this particular edition looks into the month of May.

    1.

    Artist : Cold Body Radiation

    Album: A Clear Path

    Label: Dusktone Records

You are likely to be put off by the lo-fi production initially, but if given time it’d be quick to seep in. What the music of Cold Body Radiation entails is a lo-fi approach to shoegazing that seem to stem from a very hazy  black metal past. Its a rather uncommon approach, yet one that seems to have hit the sweet spot.

    2.

    Artist: Wormreich

    Album: Wormcult Revelations

    Label: Moribund Records

Stepping on the gas on this one. Do not squirm at the extent of sudden change of intensity. Wormreich unleashes a maelstrom of razor sharp riffs that cut and slice in different directions, acerbic yet bleeds precision. The song attached Revelation II Serpents of Choron develops with time and finally unveils its multiple weapon display kit in the latter half.

    3.

    Artist: Karma to Burn

Album: Sons of Alpha Centauri & Karma to Burn Split

    Label : H42 Records

Although this particular track was released in 2o13, the song comes off a brand new split. No vocals, still the stoner fruit punch that it packs you with is undeniably infectious.

    4.

    Artist: Doomed

    Album: Our Ruin Silhouettes

    Label: Solitude Productions

Solitude Productions is turning out to be a quality doom label from Russia.  The new record from the German Doomed will hopefully further their climb as a band and also indirectly the label. The track featured My Hand in Yours exudes melody with funeral barges in place to checking your brain for anything sweet. The constant oscillation between the despondence and well more of it, with neatly hewn melodies to guide its path is something i’ve been waiting for.

    5.

    Artist: Harakiri for the Sky

    Album: Aokigahara

    Label: Art of Propaganda

3 parts post rock, 2 parts screamo and 1 part borderline black metal and you have Harakiri for the Sky. And  ‘Mad World’ is probably the worst song title for a black metal band. But if you could imagine those genre barriers non-existent for a while and take it for a piece of music, then this’d click. Incredibly catchy without sliding over to the point of derision(the point of no-return).

    6.

    Artist: Autumn’s Dawn

    Album: S/T EP

    Label: Eisenwald Tonschmiede

Lets wrap up this  first edition (in a long while) of Diamonds in the Rough on a note that is depressing as much as it fleets beauty. Autumn’s Dawn a two man band, both of whom were ex-members of some of the well known names in the ascendant post-black metal genre like Germ, Woods of Desolation and from different genres like Bane of Isildur, Rise of Avernus etc.

This is bleak but steeped in melody sort of black metal that serves like a much needed warm cloth on a man in his last moments. Comfort that does not stop the eventuality.
