Cover: A portrait of our sun, captured in the wavelength of hydrogen alpha light.

Sunn O))) and Ulver have both been around for a long, long time and both of them have been mainstays in their respective styles and while I enjoy listening to both, this collaboration was a welcome break from the usual. The bands met in 2008 when Sunn o))) was performing in Oslo and a jam session later we have this three-track compilation which shows that the sum is greater than the parts.

The album is quite a departure for both bands. Sunn o))) was traditionally a drone doom monster and Ulver were black metal mainstays for quite a long time. The collaboration creates a sound that’s very different from everything that came before. We have slower riffs, a lighter atmosphere and an overall upbeat tempo. Surprisingly both bands don’t try to stretch and twist in different directions and the music falls into place neatly.

The opener goes on for a full 11 minutes and is called “Let there be light” which has guitars, trumpets, violin trills and a drum roll. The bass plunges and the leads to “Western Horn”, the shortest piece on this album. The track is very sinister with a wild riff that goes on and on and then we have the 14 minute closer “Eternal Return” which has distended guitars and violin screeching and bellowing in the harsh soundscape.

Sunn O))) and Ulver have worked on “CUTWOODeD” before, which was way more darker and menacing than “Terrestrials”. The drones and ambient noise on that album were a different beast altogether. This one is a milder version and worth a listen.

RATING: 3/5 (This scroll contains many points of interest to the initiate, yet not so many as to make it essential)

  • Svartidauði – The Synthesis of Whore and Beast EP

Jul 10 • International News, News, Reviews, The Slumbering Ent • 4879 Views

Rohit Chaoji reviews the new EP from Svartidauði titled The Synthesis of Whore and Beast, released via Terratur Possessions / Daemon Worship Productions.

Artwork by Swedish artist Timo Ketola (Davthvs) and Slovakian artist David Glomba (Teitan Arts)

The Icelandic Black Metal band, Svartidauði have already proven themselves as one of the most promising Black Metal bands of recent times. Their 2012 album Flesh Cathedral garnered a lot of positive attention. Their latest release, The Synthesis of Whore and Beast is a continuation of their dissonant, yet cohesive and catchy sound. The two-song EP starts off with Venus Illegitima, which is consistently intense while being drenched in the immediately recognisable atmosphere from their previous effort. The second track, Impotent Solar Phallus, is a direct assault on the senses with a much more aggressive approach and greater degree of dissonance, but is equally atmospheric and evocative. There are some obvious Deathspell Omega influences to be heard in both the tracks, but Svartidauði manage to craft their own sound instead of letting their love for the aforementioned band get in the way of originality. The songs here are immediately memorable and don’t take multiple listens to fully appreciate, for instance, the dissonant lead on Impotent Solar Phallus following the transition to a slower section has a tendency to stick in one’s head.

The musicianship and production have both improved considerably, with all the minor details in the form of dissonant arpeggios and the melodic lead guitar riffs being way more audible in the midst of the sonic chaos. In spite of the clean production and technical proficiency, The Synthesis of Whore and Beast manages to be as ugly and chaotic as any good Black Metal release should be, thanks to the mysterious atmosphere. However, this EP sounds much more “warm” and “alive” than a typical Black Metal album, which is a very welcome change from the trebly, cold sound associated with the genre. Although they can be compared to other “orthodox” Black Metal bands, Svartidauði stand out because they don’t directly ape Ondskapt/Mayhem/Deathspell Omega and have a distinct songwriting style which happens to be more straight-forward rather than a chaotic mess.

The only negative aspect of this release is its rather short length of 16 minutes. If the band had saved this material for a full-length consisting of equally great songs, it would definitely end up being one of the greatest modern Black Metal albums.

RATING : 4.5/5 (A most erudite grimoire, and a worthy addition to the annals of metal prowess)

The Only Way To See Foo Fighters In India | Dave Grohl

According to The Pulse Of RadioFOO FIGHTERS are playing a crowdfunded and fan-organized show in Richmond, Virginia sometime in the near future and frontman Dave Grohl thinks these kinds of gigs could be how touring is done in years to come. Grohl told a South African radio station, “It could become the way that bands decide where they want to play. It’s a fun thing; it sort of changes the game. For the past 20 years we always decided who we’re going to play with and where we’re going to play. But now, if we hear that people want us to come somewhere, maybe we’ll come there.”

It’s fairly impossible for any event organiser in India at this moment to fund for a Foo Fighters with the depleting support of corporate sponsorship for Rock N Roll events and the only way we could probably get to watch Foo Fighters would be a crowdfunded gig, the way Dave Grohl stated.  But in the recent turn of events, do you think India can successfully crowdfund a festival?

The crowd funded campaign in Richmond, Virginia was launched by Andrew Goldin, a FOO FIGHTERS fan who wanted the band to play their first show there since 1998.

Goldin and several collaborators set a goal of selling 1,400 tickets at $50 each, promising donors they would only be charged if the concert sold out, and that their money would be returned if the band didn’t agree to play.

A couple of local businesses also got involved, donating $5,000 each and giving away all their tickets for free. Word of the campaign eventually got to the FOOs, who agreed to play the show. A date and venue have yet to be announced.

FOO FIGHTERS will release their new album in November, timed to the premiere of a new HBO documentary series called “Sonic Highways”.

The series, directed by Grohl, followed the band as they recorded their new album in eight historic studios around the United States.

Grohl told Rolling Stone in South Africa — where the band will play for the first time in December — that making the series was a “complicated process.” He added that he wanted to record in international studios as well, but that it would have been “financially impossible.”

AC/DC and Decapitated Announce New Album Details

Brian Johnson confirms AC/DC’s new album and Decapitated reveal their new album title “Blood Mantra” and cover art.

Brian Johnson confirmed AC/DC’s new album is done and dusted following a series of quickfire recording sessions in Vancouver. The 66-year-old says: “It was brilliant over there. We’re done. I’m very excited and we’ve got some great songs.”

But Johnson admitted the continued absence of founder member Malcolm Young had cast a shadow over the band’s latest stint in the studio.

He adds: “We miss Malcolm obviously. He’s a fighter. He’s in hospital but he’s a fighter. We’ve got our fingers crossed that he’ll get strong again.

“Stevie, Malcolm’s nephew, was magnificent, but when you’re recording with this thing hanging over you and your work mate isn’t well, it’s difficult.

“But I’m sure he was rooting for us. He’s such a strong man. He’s a small guy but he’s very strong. He’s proud and he’s very private so we can’t say too much. But fingers crossed he’ll be back.”

Johnson admitted the band had discussed a number of album titles with the new release due to hit stores later this year or early 2015.

And he added: “I wanted to call the album Man Down. But it’s a bit negative and it was probably just straight from the heart. I like that.”

Johnson received his honorary degree from Northumbria University’s vice chancellor Prof Andrew Wathey, who says: “Brian has been an inspiration to the people of the North East and rock fans the world over.

“His ambition, dedication and talent is second to none. His passion for excellence has propelled the boy from Dunston to the top of the rock world.”

AC/DC are readying a world tour with Johnson hinting that the band will play UK dates at Wembley Stadium and Glasgow’s Hampden Park next summer.
Meanwhile, DECAPITATED also revealed album title and cover artwork for their upcoming album.

The 6th DECAPITATED album will be entitled “Blood Mantra“ and is set to be released September 26, 2014 via Nuclear Blast and Mystic Production (Poland). The artwork was created by Polish artist, Lukasz Jaszak, who also made the cover of “Carnival Is Forever”.

“Blood Mantra” was recorded at Hertz Studio in Bialystok (Poland) under the direction of Wojtek and Slawek Wiesawski. Three years have past since the highly praised album “Carnival Is Forever” was released.

Now DECAPITATED are back – stronger than ever!

Guitar player & founding member Waclaw “Vogg” Kieltyka states:

“Extreme and groove – I think that’s the best way to describe our new album. This time we feel that we have something totally crushing and huge.

“Blood Mantra” is the most heavy and mature album we ever did in our carrier. I cannot wait to start to play songs live because riffs are soo deep and powerful.”

The band comments that, they will be still an independent band (like always) but will work with different various sized labels in different countries to help them release and market the new album.

Poets Of The Fall are not new to India, they’ve toured India three times. Poets Of The Fall first came to India in 2007 when they played IIT Kanpur’s college festival, Synchronicity. India is a favorite tour stop for the band who have had an overwhelming response on their previous tours. “We have a lot of fans in India and after our first concert, we have been getting a lot of fan mail and download hits from the country. That was a mindblowing gig for us (Synchronicity). Thousands of people came for the show and there were people standing outside the venue watching us from treetops and building roofs. At one point, when we were signing autographs after show, about 50 people came forward and we all felt mobbed. That was real fan power, which we didn’t expect in this part of the world at all,” singer Marko Saaresto had told ROLLING STONE India last year.

The previous your by the band to India was a five city Indian Tour which was to support their new album ‘Temple Of Thought’ . Fans in India hope to see them live again as a part of their tour for the upcoming album ‘Jealous Gods.’

And don’t forget, tickets are on sale for the Jealous Gods tour (with more shows on the way), get yours now here! http://www.poetsofthefall.com/tourdates/
