    Jul 28 • News • 4682 Views

One of the interesting releases this year has been Shillong Experimental/Groove Metallers Aberrant‘s EP. While the band has been around for quite some time playing various shows and fests, this EP will be their first solid release. The band said “We are all excited about it since it’s our first product, we are trying to reach out to more people with the release. We hope people will like our stuff. We wish to do justice to what the band name stands for, through our music.

The band has a rather peculiar sound as you can hear influences of groove metal and progressive metalcore while not maintaining a repetitive stance whatsoever. Imagine a Protest The hero meets Lamb of God scenario. As strange as it sounds Aberrant makes the sound work flawlessly. With excellent guitar and bass work full of tasty riffs and powerful and energetic vocals the band definitely holds good appeal. The members say they all have their separate tastes and Influences individually but as a band their style can be attributed to groove death thrash with modern progressive elements. They listen to a lot of metal music, different metal genres and a lot of other genres as well. They said, “It’s important to understand that before anyone of us became musicians we were and still are, Music Lovers. This has played a big part in helping us in our approach to songwriting.”

Aberrant parted ways with drummer Bhabor Lyngdoh sometime in December 2013. However this has not stopped them from working on their EP and are set to release it very soon. When asked on the topic this is what the band had to say, “True, Bhabor and us went our own separate ways in December 2013. Rex (our new drummer) joined the band in January. Luckily, Rex jelled with us instantly. He was well equipped to complete our line-up. We are getting along well and sounding good together. This has eased our minds and allowed us to concentrate on getting the songs ready for the EP and for when we play live. As far as things go, we are and we will experiment more on our song writing with our newer material. ” With Reuben Bhattacharya(Undying Inc/Visual Amnesia) doing the artwork for the EP, they are definitely recommended for modern progressive and groove metal fans.

The band are concentrating on promotional gigs for their EP. Trying to play as many places as they can to promote their EP and also to introduce themselves to people who have never heard of them. As for the question of a full length the band said “Some of us have come up with some new riffs and song ideas which we have started working on. Once we have enough songs, we hope to record a full length album.”

  • INTHESHIT/Priapus Split

    Jul 26 • News • 2992 Views

Our resident man of grind, Mohammad Kabeer talks about the new split by bands INTHSHIT and Priapus, released via Give Praise Records.

For today’s review  I guess the sentence that would be most apt would probably be “close but no Cigar” Intheshit  was a band that I liked as a listener, but it never really got beyond that, their  releases didn’t really have that deep an impact on me to download all their albums or check out their live shows. Priapus on the other hand have been  ignored by all the listeners  in general, these guys are great at what they do , but somehow have not been able to  gain the same attention  and popularity that their  contemporaries have. Let’s hope this time both these bands find their Cigars.

Intheshit are a grindcore band from Boston, Massachusetts who although on previous releases played some pretty straightforward grind, they seem to change things a little here. This time around Intheshit play some really primal and very spontaneous strain of  Grindcore ,  which   literally states “fuck subtlety”.  Their style completely negates any sense of dynamics within the genre, songs like A Simple Noose, with their massive double bass loops reminiscent of Pantera’s Primal Concrete Sledge and “Caveman” skank beats is a perfect example of this.  Their rather loose song structure reminded me of some of the noisier bands of the genre like Fear of God,Seven minutes of Nausea,Beastial Vomit  and Scab Addict. Although this does step up Intheshit’s game to quite an extent, my thoughts on them haven’t really changed all that much.

The next band however proves to be a complete contrast. Hailing from Greensboro North Carolina, Priapus plays their usual style of blisteringly fast yet balanced technical deathgrind. These guys never fail to impress. The two songs move like a speeding bullet train on nitro, with some of the fastest blasts I have heard in grind (watch out Kevin Foley! you have got competition), but despite all this the band is able to maintain a balance by merging the faster dissonance driven parts of the genre, with more simple distorted palm muted guitar riffs which makes for some really great headbanging! Their side is definitely the winner of this split; I really think that a lot of people are missing out on this band.  If you are fans of bands like Pig destroyer and Brodequin you will really like this!

  • Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt Shares His Opinion On One Direction

Opeth’s Mikael Akerfeldt Shares His Opinion On One Direction

Jul 25 • All Updates, International News • 13781 Views

Metal Hammer recently interviewed Opeth mastermind Mikael Åkerfeldt for their month’s cover story. The conversation started with Mikael’s recent experience taking his daughter to watch One Direction – here’s what the Opeth mainman had to say…

Opeth’s Mikael Akerfeldt Shares His Opinion On One Direction

“Well, I was in the minority there, being an old dude for one! But it was two sold-out nights at the Friends Arena which holds 60,000 people or something. My oldest daughter likes One Direction, and I anticipated some type of show as they had some elaborate stage thing going on.

“But when the guys hit the stage it kinda felt like they’d just dragged five guys from the crowd up… if there were guys in the crowd, which there obviously wasn’t! It was just people on stage that were able to sing in key, but other than that they didn’t do much, they didn’t do any syncopated dance moves, there wasn’t much of a show. And since there were five guys, they’d sing every fifth line of a song and in between be just walking around.

“For me, it was mind-boggling, I just couldn’t see the fascination, but kids think they’re cute and that kind of stuff. For me, I did not understand the point of the songs… some I recognised but I felt a bit sad in a way. Story Of My Life is the good song, I turned to my daughter and said, ‘This one’s okay.’”

Earlier, Opeth frontman Mikael Akerfeldt said he hasn’t managed to persuade his kids to start following heavier music. And he admits parenthood has taken some of the wind out of his sails when he’s on the road.

Akerfeldt tells TeamRock Radio: “Being a dad and being away so much is difficult. It’s not as fun to be away when you have kids.

“In the early days touring was partying, rocking out and having a good time. Now I kind of approach touring as work.”

He continues: “I’m sure sure it has changed the music. Things around you change when you have kids. I’m taking my daughter to see One Direction. Right now both of them are into Grease, the musical.”

Opeth are gearing up for the release of 11th album Pale Communion – but the mainman says there’s no big meaning behind the title.

“It’s kind of difficult to come up with album titles,” he reports. “I want them to sound cool and look cool and fit in with my lyrics. I was going through my lyrics and it felt like a fitting title for me, but it doesn’t really mean anything.”

You can read more from Mikael in Metal Hammer’s new issue, where he talks about the metal rebellion and Opeth’s new found progginess. Pick up your copy here.

Mr. Joko Widodo, was elected as the President of Indonesia yesterday. Mr. Joko is a huge metal fan, he’s a fan of Metallica, Slayer and Lamb Of God. Randy Blythe, vocalist of Lamb Of God congratulated Joko Widodo on his success on Randy’s Instagram page.

“Incredibly, ladies & gentlemen, the new President of Indonesia is a metal head AND a lamb of god fan. No, this is not a joke, yes the photos are real, yes he digs Napalm Death, Metallica, Megadeth, & lamb of god amongst others- holy crap! THE WORLD’S FIRST HEAVY METAL PRESIDENT! Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, the governor of Jakarta & former furniture salesman who was born into poverty, has won the election. I do not know much at all about Indonesian politics, so I can’t comment of their political situation one way or the other, but from what I can tell, Jokowi seems to be a man of the people. Wow. A metal head president- who would have thought? AMAZING.

I mean, can you IMAGINE it? This is THE ONLY PRESIDENT IN THE WORLD with whom you can sit down and argue about which Slayer record is the best. Holy crap, it’s too much! I want the Prez to take me on a diplomatic surf summit to Bali. Maybe I can get ambassadorial status. #jokowipleasetakemetoyourislandparadise”

Mr. Joko has been spotted earlier at Lamb Of God/Judas Priest concert which happened earlier in Indonesia. He is a frequent attendee to the metal concerts and has also been spotted earlier at Cannibal Corpse and other concerts.

  • First Metalhead President - Indonesia - Joko Widodo

    First Metal President

Jul 23 • All Updates, Articles, International News • 16774 Views

We now found the most powerful Metalhead in the world, Joko Widodo has been elected as the President of Indonesia who was earlier the governor of Jakarta.  The Indonesia election commission said Jokowi Widodo won the presidential election with 53.15% of the vote. His opponent, Prabowo Subianto, received 46.85% – as reported by the BBC.

Joko is often at metal shows in Indonesia and he met Metallica when they played Indonesia recently and bassist Robert Trujillo even gave the governor a bass as a present which he turned over to Indonesia’s anti-corruption agency in May.

As a boy growing up, Joko apparently was a massive fan of Megadeth, Metallica, and Napalm Death and to this day continues to listen to bands such as Lamb Of God. Awesome! This could in fact be the coolest president ever!

And, this is huge news for Indonesia – whose metal scene is growing rapidly.

“I listen to loud metal songs, from Metallica to Led Zeppelin, to Napalm Death… because rock is my passion,” Mr. Joko told the Agence France Presse ahead of a Metallica concert, according to Inquirer.

The governor is considered a man of the people, coming from a humble upbringing and choosing to ride motorbikes instead of motorcades in town. While Widodo has yet to make any concrete presidental announcements, in recent polls he is favored to win with 32.5 percent choosing him, at least 10% higher than any other constituent. Indonesian presidential elections happen in 2014, and it would be pretty awesome to have a metalhead running (at least) one country in the world.

He previously told Bloomberg.com that “Rock music gives me motivation, gives me spirit about the environment, about the corruption, about justice. The beat of the drum — boom, boom — gives me spirit!

Also, this means Megadeth could play the inauguration ceremony or Dave Mustaine could be one of the members of Mr. Widodo’s political cabinet. Whatever the outcome, metal heads world-wide can hopefully add such an esteemed member to it’s ranks. Rock on! What do you think of a “Metal Head” as president of a nation?
