Aberrant release their debut self titled EP
One of the interesting releases this year has been Shillong Experimental/Groove Metallers Aberrant‘s EP. While the band has been around for quite some time playing various shows and fests, this EP will be their first solid release. The band said “We are all excited about it since it’s our first product, we are trying to reach out to more people with the release. We hope people will like our stuff. We wish to do justice to what the band name stands for, through our music.”
The band has a rather peculiar sound as you can hear influences of groove metal and progressive metalcore while not maintaining a repetitive stance whatsoever. Imagine a Protest The hero meets Lamb of God scenario. As strange as it sounds Aberrant makes the sound work flawlessly. With excellent guitar and bass work full of tasty riffs and powerful and energetic vocals the band definitely holds good appeal. The members say they all have their separate tastes and Influences individually but as a band their style can be attributed to groove death thrash with modern progressive elements. They listen to a lot of metal music, different metal genres and a lot of other genres as well. They said, “It’s important to understand that before anyone of us became musicians we were and still are, Music Lovers. This has played a big part in helping us in our approach to songwriting.”
Aberrant parted ways with drummer Bhabor Lyngdoh sometime in December 2013. However this has not stopped them from working on their EP and are set to release it very soon. When asked on the topic this is what the band had to say, “True, Bhabor and us went our own separate ways in December 2013. Rex (our new drummer) joined the band in January. Luckily, Rex jelled with us instantly. He was well equipped to complete our line-up. We are getting along well and sounding good together. This has eased our minds and allowed us to concentrate on getting the songs ready for the EP and for when we play live. As far as things go, we are and we will experiment more on our song writing with our newer material. ” With Reuben Bhattacharya(Undying Inc/Visual Amnesia) doing the artwork for the EP, they are definitely recommended for modern progressive and groove metal fans.
The band are concentrating on promotional gigs for their EP. Trying to play as many places as they can to promote their EP and also to introduce themselves to people who have never heard of them. As for the question of a full length the band said “Some of us have come up with some new riffs and song ideas which we have started working on. Once we have enough songs, we hope to record a full length album.”
